Art And Technology Schwartz Moffat Essay Many modern artists use high technology equipment in their works. Whereas traditionally artists used a pencil or brush to make beautiful works of art, artists in the early twenty-first century are now using sound, video or computer generated images. Digital art developed from simple patterns and shapes made using computer programs to finished works of art which can look as realistic as a watercolour or oil painting. Modern art exhibitions often include more videos and installations than traditional painting or drawings. Even artists which use traditional techniques increasingly use modern technology such as the internet to display their works and communicate with other artists. Modern technology provides a means for artists to create works faster with more tools than ever before. I will be discussing the impact of some of these technologies in relation to the art of some modern artists. I will argue that modern technology such as the computer and video is another tool for an artist to use in their work. I will especially focus on the video artwork of Tracey Moffat and the computer artwork of Lillian Schwartz as but two examples of artists today who use modern techniques. Moffat is an Australian contemporary artist who uses film extensively as an art-form, and many of her works are based on and reflect the modern technology of Hollywood movies and television. Schwartz is an artist who has a long history of using computer technology to experiment ways of creating and manipulating works of art. She has also written extensively about the topic of computer influence in art, and about art produced by computers. Modern technology is having a huge impact on recent art. Modern artists are using new materials and techniques to produce their artworks. Whereas in the past painting and drawing were the main mediums used by artists in their work, now in the 21st century installations, sound, video and computers are becoming more widely used and popular. Artists today are continually experimenting with new technology in different ways, finding new ways to use old mediums and finding new mediums as well. In modern art displays such as the various Biennales held around the world, video plays a dominant role, as well as installation art and increasingly, digital art. There are even exhibitions that solely focus on digital art, such as Ars Electronica held annually in Linz, Austria. The internet is becoming used more with many contemporary artists using it to display their works with online galleries, talk to other artists and sell their works. Internet sites such as deviantart. com or yessy. com offer artists an opportunity to sell and display their works and communicate with people throughout the world. Computer programs such as Photoshop and Painter allow artists to easily manipulate photographs and paint pictures using custom artists tools which can create the effects in a few minutes of what previously would have taken months to paint. Many artists today are involved in using digital art technology to produce websites, computer games or online art exhibitions. The conceptart. org website is one example of a site which mostly displays digital art, that has over 100,000 posts by many different people. Digital art is increasingly being displayed in contemporary art exhibitions as well as being online, becoming more popular towards the end of the 20th century. Digital art made its official entry into the art world only in the late 1990s, when museums and galleries began increasingly to incorporate the art form into their shows and dedicate entire exhibitions to it. (Paul 2003: 23) The impact that these technologies is having on contemporary art is sometimes hard to pin down at one time since they are moving so fast that they are constantly changing and being updated. In her films, she uses imagery which comes from popular culture, from television programs and movies that she has seen including from sources which are not often seen as part of the art world, such as B-grade television programs and television advertisements. She makes use of the stylistic resources of advertising and even so-called trash-TV' (Reinhardt 1999: 7) She grew up in Brisbane in the 1960s, and during this time experienced much of popular culture through different types of modern culture on the new technological tools of television and cinema, from melodramas to deeply surreal film noir (Sever 2001: 12) She also uses modern music in her films such as with cuts showing Jimmie Little singing in the film Night Cries (Fig. ). This film shows a woman caring for her dying mother, as well as showing many years before the woman as a young child at the beach with her mother who is much younger then. Moffat has used the film to create an effect similar to that of Frederick McCubbins The Pioneer which shows a dying person on one side and the same person much younger on the other. This gives the audience a feeling of sadness as they think about all the events which the person went through in their lifetime. The audience would see the way the woman would feel bound to care for her mother in the same way that her mother cared for her when she was a child. Moffat also has considered using computers in manipulating photographic images, because the number of things she can do is greatly increased with many computing tools available for the artist.

Sheer manpower ratioswere unbelievably one-sided, with only nine of the nations 31 millioninhabitants residing in the seceding states (Angle 7). The Union alsohad large amounts of land available for growing food crops which servedthe dual purpose of providing food for its hungry soldiers and money forits ever-growing industries. The South, on the other hand, devoted mostof what arable land it had exclusively to its main cash crop: cotton(Catton, The Coming Fury 38). Raw materials were almost entirelyconcentrated in Northern mines and refining industries. Railroads andtelegraph lines, the veritable lifelines of any army, traced paths allacross the Northern countryside but left the South isolated, outdated,and starving (See Appendices) . Between the years of 1840 and 1860,American industry saw sharp and steady growth. In 1840 the total valueof goods manufactured in the United States stood at $483 million,increasing over fourfold by 1860 to just under $2 billion, with theNorth taking the kings ransom (Brinkley et al. 312). The underlyingreason behind this dramatic expansion can be traced directly to theAmerican Industrial Revolution. Beginning in the early 1800s, traces of the industrial revolution inEngland began to bleed into several aspects of the American society. One of the first industries to see quick development was the textileindustry, but, thanks to the British government, this development almostnever came to pass. Years earlier, Englands James Watt had developedthe first successful steam engine. This invention, coupled with thebirth of James Hargreaves spinning jenny, completely revolutionized theBritish textile industry, and eventually made it the most profitable inthe world (Industrial Revolution). The British government,parsimonious with its newfound knowledge of machinery, attempted toprotect the nations manufacturing preeminence by preventing the exportof textile machinery and even the emigration of skilled mechanics. Despite valiant attempts at deterrence, though, many immigrants managedto make their way into the United States with the advanced knowledge ofEnglish technology, and they were anxiou s to acquaint America with thenew machines (Furnas 303). And acquaint the Americans they did: more specifically, New EnglandAmericans. It was people like Samuel Slater who can be credited withbeginning the revolution of the textile industry in America. A skilledmechanic in England, Slater spent long hours studying the schematics forthe spinning jenny until finally he no longer needed them. He emigratedto Pawtucket, Rhode Island, and there, together with a Quaker merchantby the name of Moses Brown, he built a spinning jenny from memory(Furnas 303). This meager mill would later become known as the firstmodern factory in America. It would also become known as the point atwhich the North began its economic domination of the Confederacy. Although slow to accept change, The South was not entirely unaffectedby the onset of the Industrial Revolution. Another inventor by the nameof Eli Whitney set out in 1793 to revolutionize the Southern cottonindustry. Whitney was working as a tutor for a plantation owner inGeorgia (he was also, ironically, born and raised in New England) andtherefore knew the problems of harvesting cotton (Brinkley et al. 200). Until then, the arduous task of separating the seeds from the cottonbefore sale had been done chiefly by slave labor and was, consequently,very inefficient. Whitney developed a machine which would separate theseed from the cotton swiftly and effectively, cutting the harvestingtime by more than one half (Industrial Revolution). This machine,which became known as the cotton gin, had profound results on the South,producing the highest uptrend the industry had ever, and would ever,see. In that decade alone cotton production figures increased by morethan 2000 percent (Randall and Donald 36). Enormous amounts of businessopportunities opened up, including, perhaps most importantly, theexpansion of the Southern plantations. This was facilitated by the factthat a single worker could now do the same amount of work in a few hoursthat a group of workers had once needed a whole day to do (Brinkl ey etal. 201). This allowed slaves to pick much more cotton per day andtherefore led most plantation owners to expand their land base. Themonetary gains of the cash crop quickly took precedence over the basicnecessity of the food crop, which could be gotten elsewhere. In 1791cotton production amounted to only 4000 bales, but by 1860, productionlevels had skyrocketed to just under five million bales (Randall andDonald 36). Cotton was now bringing in nearly $200 million a year,which constituted almost two-thirds of the total export trade (Brinkleyet al. 329). King Cotton was born, and it soon became a fundamentalmotive in Southern diplomacy. However, during this short burst ofeconomic prowess, the South failed to realize that it would never besustained by King Cotton alone. What it needed was the guiding handof Queen Industry.Eli Whitney soon came to realize that the South would not readilyaccept change, and decided to take his inventive mind back up to theNorth, where it could be put to good use. He found his niche in thesmall arms business. Previously, during two long years of quasi-warwith France, Americans had been vexed by the lack of rapidity with whichsufficient armaments could be produced. Whitney came to the rescue withthe invention of interchangeable parts. His vision of the perfectfactory included machines which would produce, from a preshaped mold,the various components needed to build a standard infantry rifle, andworkers on an assembly line who would construct it (IndustrialRevolution). The North, eager to experiment and willing to tryanything that smacked of economic progress, decided to test the watersof this inviting new method of manufacture. It did not take theresourceful Northerners very long to actualize Eli Whitneys dream andmake mass production a reality. The small arms industry boomed, andkept on booming. The Confederacy had made one fatal mistake: believing that its thrivingcotton industry alone would be enough to sustain itself throughout thewar. Southerners saw no need to venture into the uncharted industrialterritories when good money could be made with cotton. Southerners could grow vast amounts of cotton,but due to the lack of mills, they could do nothing with it. Consequently, the cotton was sold to the Northerners who would use it intheir factories to produce wools and linens, which were in turn soldback to the South. This cycle stimulated industrial growth in the Unionand stagnated it in the Confederate states (Catton, Reflections 144). Southern plantation owners erred in believing that the growing textileindustries of England and France were highly dependent on their cotton,and that, in the event of war, those countries would come to theirrescue (Civil War, World Bo ok). They believed that the North wouldthen be forced to acquiesce to the perfect Southern society. Theywere wrong. During the war years, the economical superiority of the Union, whichhad been so eminent before the war, was cemented. The Civil War gave aneven bigger boost to the already growing factories in the North. Thetroops needed arms and warm clothes on a constant basis, and NorthernIndustry was glad to provide them. By 1862, the Union could boast ofits capacity to manufacture almost all of its own war materials usingits own resources (Brinkley et al. 415). The South, on the other hand,was fatally dependent on outside resources for its war needs. Dixie was not only lagging far behind in the factories. As the war progressed,the Confederate railroad system steadily deteriorated, and, by the endof the struggle, it had all but collapsed. Communication, or rather lack thereof, was another impediment toSouthern economical growth. The telegraph had burst into American lifein 1844, when Samuel Morse first transmitted, from the Supreme Courtchamber in the capitol to Alfred Vail in Baltimore, his famous wordsWhat hath God wrought! (Brinkley et al. 314). The advent of thisfresh form of communication greatly facilitated the operation of therailroad lines in the North. Telegraph lines ran along the tracks,connecting one station to the next and aiding the scheduling of thetrains. Moreover, the telegraph provided instant communication betweendistant cities, tying the nation together like never before. Yet,ironically, it also buttressed the growing schism between the twodiverging societies (314). The South, unimpressed by this new moderntechnology and not having the money to experiment, chose not to delvevery deeply into its development. Pity, they would learn to regret it. By 1860, the North had laid over 90 percent of the nations some 50,000miles of telegraph wire. Morses telegraph had become an ideal answerto the problems of long-distance communication, with its latest triumphof land taking shape in the form of the Pacific telegraph, which ranfrom New York to San Francisco and used 3,595 miles of wire (Brinkley etal. 315). The North, as with all telegraph lines, embraced itsrelatively low cost and ease of construction. The Pacific telegraphbrought the agricultural Northwest together with the more industriousNortheast and the blossoming West, forming an alliance which would proveto break the back of the ever-weakening South (324-25). The Civil War was a trying time for both the Union and the Confederacyalike, but the question of its outcome was obvious from the start. TheNorth was guaranteed a decisive victory over the ill-equipped South. Northerners, prepared to endure the deprivation of war, were startled tofind that they were experiencing an enormo us industrial boom even afterthe first year of war. Indeed, the only Northern industry that sufferedfrom the war was the carrying trade (Catton, Reflections 144). Then followed cook shops in the 16th century and eating houses, taverns or coffee shops, incredibly famous in the 18th. Without denying, London hospitality has undergone lots of changes to become what it is nowadays. Or has it? Are there real differences between modern and 18th century hospitality or are there mere changes of its forms? To begin with, contrary to what Ackroyd says, lots of authors consider the 18th century to be the birth of the hospitality in Britain. It could be due to different reasons. It was a time of great experimentation, political but also social. Great Britain was economically strong and the development of its middle class could not but contributed to this phenomenon. The technology discoveries participated greatly in the process with, for example, new technology of spirit distillation. The attitude to food had changed and the British begin to eat out socializing, showing off or just enjoying the food in a different place that is neither their home nor the one of their friends, colleagues, etc. One of these places was a coffee shop and it is still popular nowadays. One could find some in the Threadneedle Street, in St Martin’s Lane or at the corner of Pall Mall, convenient because of making it easy â€Å"to make appointments in any part of town† (Macaulay in Ackroyds, p. 320). They used to be the business places with certain clientele to be found in every one of them. Smoking fog, periodicals, bewiggered gentlemen, news and rumours were particular to these places. Nowadays we can still find independent coffee shops with character, for example, Bullet Cafe (according to the guidebook of London). They are rare. A much more recent phenomenon are the cafe chains such as Starbucks or Coffee Republique. They tend to have little or no character, being built in a corporate style and often serve as a spare meeting room for local offices. Still serving as a meeting place with news and rumours, they are frequented predominantly by women. Actually, that is one of the main changes that have emerged the presence of women who used to be excluded from any kinds of public places in the 18th century with the exception of tea shops. Only men used to frequent the coffee shops and only men used to eat out in eating-houses which â€Å"in the 18th century became known as beef houses or chop houses, together with taverns specializing in more formal or protracted food† (Ackroyd). The famous ones were Dolly’s Chop-house in Paternoster Row or cook-shops behind St Martin-in-the-Fields. The common food was meat. The recipes were not sophisticated with little influence of foreign cuisines. At least they pretended to be so, as you could find elements of French cuisine, for example, in the cookery books of that time. Nowadays due to globalisation and social changes including the customers’ behavioural changes, the situation is completely different. There exist a great number of any types of restaurants in London, serving food of five continents with the ingredients of all over the world. They are eager to satisfy the demand of any customer, looking for a traditional or exotic food, heavy or sane, â€Å"expensive† or â€Å"cheap†, fast food or haute cuisine. You can find all these different types of food in another form of hospitality that existed also in the 18th century but at that time with the food particular to that period – take away. Surprisingly, in London it seems like this niche is not dominated by the global chains like McDonalds or KFC, etc to the extent they do in other countries. There exist lots of local independent businesses offering traditional fish and chips or Patoka or Chinese food and they constitute an important part of the take away market. We could also speak about new concepts of hospitality that didn’t exist before, like theatre cafe or restaurants with live music, clubs or degustation menus. Summarizing it up, we can agree that there exist differences between the hospitality of the 18th century London and of the modern one. We can cite globalisation, emancipation of women, technological advances, new organisational and social models as ones of the reasons of these changes. Yet one thing probably has not changed – seeing food as a symbol of the society it belongs to and being particular to its characteristics, the reasons why people eat out and the extent they could enjoy it. The thing is that every time we are looking for something new, different, special and the hospitality just follows us.

I have to admit that the challenges that I experienced in life made me stronger. My roommate narrated during the interview how he suffered while still young. It was painful to hear her say that her parents separated while he was just five years. He adapted to the situation to live in a single parenthood family. This showed me clearly that when we look in to life in a more positive manner life would always be good. Let me also highlight that my friend highlighted that we should avoid being negative in life. During the interview, she told me that we should not always opt t hat the worst will happen. We should always opt for the best to happen. I have to note that it is also important to desist from negative behaviors to be positive in life. My mother used to remind me to desist from bad behaviors like being late in school, and being lazy. Aristotle writes that prior to inquiring about the attributes and essences of government a person must find an answer to the question "What is a state" (Book 3, chapter 1, 1275a). In Politics (1252-3), Aristotle states his belief that humans came together out of a common need, thus the formation of cities and city-states. It is evident, therefore, that we must begin by asking, who is the citizen, and what is the meaning of the term For here again there may be a difference of opinion. He who is a citizen in a democracy will often not be a citizen in an oligarchy (Book 3, chapter 1, 1275a). Aristotle also commented that besides the citizens, states are comprised of other elements, such as a working class, a rich class, and a poor class (Politics, Book 4, chapter 4). The working class, which was in the middle of the two extremes, Aristotle believed to be the most capable of following rational principles. His logic was simple: those people who appeared to have to much in the way of luxuries would not be likely to submit to other citizens' authority, while those who were extremely lacking in even the basic necessities of life would likely feel too degraded to obey another's rule. Therefore, a working class would help to balance the few, wealthy elite with the many, antagonistic poor (Politics, Book 4, chapter 4). Aristotle had gone on to specify the many different groups within these three basic types, to include: military, husbandry, traders, artisans, magistrates, serfs and labourers. As has happened several times throughout history, the existence of inequality between rich and poor sparked tensions between these social classes. Contrary to previous tribal or contemporary feudal societies, Athens at this point in time did not boast any priestly class. For as culturally diverse as the world is becoming, a political community can only flourish is there is at least an agreement on the rules (Financial Times, 2005); this notion of politics is very broad. Maya’s mother spends more time with her than her father does. Although both parents love her, the love of her mother is more apparent. It is her hope that the segregation will end, and the black people will be equal to the white race. The way in which Angelou portrays her life makes the reader feel pity at times, for the way Maya and her family is treated, rage at other when Maya acts badly, and joy when good things happen for their family.

Violence on college campuses is gradually acquiring broad social significance. For many years, college campuses were believed to possess sufficient level of student safety and security. Violence and campus life seemed the two incompatible categories. However, as news are overfilled with the examples of violence in colleges that range from mass shootings to incidents of rape and assault, parents and education professionals are becoming more concerned about the atmosphere, in which students are bound to spend several years of their college life. Numerous examples confirm the relevance of campus violence issues. Addressing these issues is impossible without a systemic approach to defining and preventing violence on campus. Students must also understand how to prevent, to report, and to explain specific acts that hinder their freedoms or violate their basic rights on campus. Campus violence remains one of the most serious issues, which college and university students have to address. Either in the form of direct physical abuse or emotional pressures, many students report experiencing violence on campus. For example, the authors of the recent study published in The Journal of Adolescent Health surveyed 2,091 students in three universities on the subject of campus violence. As a result, 17 percent of male students and 16 percent of female students reported having experienced some kind of violence in the six months preceding the research (Stone). That campus violence remains an issue is further supported by detailed statistical research. Between 2005 and 2007 the number of reported murders on campus has grown from 4 in 2005 to 41 in 2007; 2 cases of negligent manslaughter were registered in 2007; the same year, the number of forcible offenses reached 1400; almost 800 cases of robbery and 1300 aggravated assaults were reported to authorities (U. S. Department of Education). These figures reveal the shocking truth: college students living on campus are subject to a whole set of physical and emotional threats. Moreover, the majority of these threats come from inside the campus. â€Å"Students are responsible for 80% of campus crime, although rarely with weapons† (Siegel). Thus, neither electronic alarm systems nor better safety grounds can secure students from becoming victims of a crime. The truth is in that research regarding violence on campus is scarce. On the one hand, professionals in education and students lack a clear definition of campus violence and thus are not always able to report the incidence of violent assault or emotional threat to authorities. On the other hand, college authorities are willing to silence the cases of violence as a matter of preserving their positive reputation. However, even the scarce information on college violence reveals several tendencies. First, campus violence often happens between students, who know each other or have already met on campus. For example, Siegel writes that â€Å"four percent of female students stated that they had been raped, predominantly by other students. Researchers report that 74% of sexually related crimes were committed by fellow students†. Second, in case of mass assaults, these are the students on campus, who become instruments of such violent attacks: for example, the case of mass shooting Steven Kazmierczak on February 14, 2008 at NIU University implies college authorities’ inability to trace possible violent threats and to protect students from similar assaults (Schlueter). Stone refers to her girlfriend, who became the victim of numerous fights with her boyfriend – a bright example of campus violence. Third, in many cases, students simply fail to define violence. â€Å"The definition of violence is hard to pinpoint, and that may be why people don’t speak out† (Stone). In this atmosphere, students should be given a chance to look deeper into what violence is. This is impossible without a profound and detailed research of what violence is and how it can be prevented. Students on campus must be able to delineate violence threats from insignificant cases of possible quarrels and conflicts between students. Students should know statistical figures and far-reaching implications of campus violence. Conclusion Violence on campus is gradually becoming a matter of the major societal concern. Numerous examples confirm the growing violence complexities on campus. Unfortunately, in the current state of research, universities and colleges fail to protect their students from violence threats; nor are they able to develop effective prevention and violence reduction strategies. Beyond the need to give a single specific definition to campus violence, colleges and universities should realize that the majority of violence dangers originate from inside the campus. As such, addressing and eliminating the discussed violence issues is impossible without a detailed systemic and scientifically grounded approach. Overview of 12th Grade Math Curriculum

By the time students graduate high school, they are expected to have a firm understanding of certain core mathematics concepts from their completed course of study in classes like Algebra II, Calculus, and Statistics. From understanding the basic properties of functions and being able to graph ellipses and hyperbolas in given equations to comprehending the concepts of limits, continuity, and differentiation in Calculus assignments, students are expected to fully grasp these core concepts in order to continue their studies in college courses. The following provides you with the basic concepts that should be attained by the end of the school year where mastery of the concepts of the previous grade is already assumed. Algebra II Concepts In terms of studying Algebra, Algebra II is the highest level high school students will be expected to complete and should grasp all core concepts of this field of study by the time they graduate. Although this class is not always available depending on the jurisdiction of the school district, the topics are also included in precalculus and other math classes students would have to take if Algebra II were not offered. Students should understand the properties of functions, the algebra of functions, matrices, and systems of equations as well as be able to identify functions as either linear, quadratic, exponential, logarithmic, polynomial or rational functions. They should also be able to identify and work with radical expressions and exponents as well as the binomial theorem. In-depth graphing should also be understood including the ability to graph ellipses and hyperbolas of given equations as well as  systems of linear equations and inequalities, quadratics functions and equations. This can often include probability and statistics by using standard deviation measures to compare the scatter of sets of real-world data as well as permutations and combinations. Calculus  and Pre-Calculus Concepts For advanced math students who take a more challenging course load throughout their high school educations, understanding Calculus is essential to finishing off their mathematics curriculums. For other students on a slower learning track, Precalculus is also available. In Calculus, students should be able to successfully review polynomial, algebraic, and transcendental functions as well as be able to define functions, graphs, and limits.  Continuity, differentiation, integration, and applications using problem-solving as the context  will also be a required skill for those expecting to graduate with a Calculus credit. Understanding the  derivatives of functions and real-life applications of derivatives will help students to investigate the relationship between the derivative of a function and the key features of its graph as well as understand the rates of change and their applications. Precalculus students, on the other hand, will be required to understand more basic concepts of the field of study including being able to identify the properties of functions, logarithms, sequences and series, vectors polar coordinates, and complex numbers, and conic sections. Finite Math and Statistics Concepts Some curricula also include an introduction to Finite Math, which combines many of the outcomes listed in other courses with topics which include finance, sets, permutations of n objects known as combinatorics, probability, statistics, matrix algebra, and linear equations. Although this course is typically offered in 11th grade, remedial students may only need to understand the concepts of Finite Math if they take the class their senior year. Similarly, Statistics is offered in the 11th and 12th grades but contains a bit more specific data that students should familiarize themselves with before graduating high school, which include statistical analysis and summarizing and interpreting the data in meaningful ways.
